Hello! I’ve shaved my legs for…THIS?!? reader. This is a reminder that I have a new newsletter called The Lowest Most Awful which you can subscribe to here.
It’s a weekly dispatch (roughly) that curates the things I’ve been procrastinating with and thinking about from the internet. You would probably like it. Here is today’s copy below:
The Lowest
Dressing for the job you want (rich woman that buys herself flowers and pretends that counts as a ‘love of gardening’)
Every so often I try and age into my personal style which can only be described as Farmer’s Market Chic. I love this blue patchwork shirt from toast, I’m not sure about these Everlane clogs, but I lose my mind when I see a wicker basket (can’t link here or i’ll have a house full of them). Like Monty Don before me, I wish to be known as a little blue boy. Side note: it’s worth looking up the story on how Monty Don stole his friends wife and said he doesn’t regret it because you ‘can’t pussyfoot around in affairs of the heart’. Very romantic, but alas only reported in Britains more questionable gossip rags that I would never openly link to on The Lowest Most Awful.
An Activist and Academic who offers you the choice of coffee or prosecco in the evenings
I have to admit I am only halfway through this profile on Silvia Federici, but she does sound like an incredible hang. A feminist professor whose book Caliban and the Witch, tracing the emergence of witch hunts throughout medieval Western Europe didn’t become a break out hit until two decades after it was originally published. Do I want to read a book that claims “the witch was the first rebellious woman, refusing the social order imposed upon her and claiming her autonomy”, probably not. But I am always in awe of someone so true to themselves and the things they stand for.
A genuinely funny book worth the hype
There are a long list of books that I have been assured will rock my world, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, All Fours, Long Island Compromise, hell even Big Swiss is sliding down the list but The Wedding People is one of first I’ve read in a while that has lived up to the hype. I am only halfway through (a theme for today, perhaps?), but I was sold as soon as the main character kept referring to people talking in the hotel lobby as ‘messy bun’ and ‘neck pillow’. I’ve fallen in love with the characters of Phoebe and Lila, the setting of a fancy beach hotel during a wedding/last hurrah is a treat and there was a scene about reading someone else’s text messages that gave me a vicarious hit of gossipers high. I should reserve my full judgement for when I am finished, but for now I will be busy trying to get my hands on a coconut pillow.
If you’re in need of distraction, may I suggest sorting out the global flight path.
Spend way too long on Saturday absorbed in the challenging task of managing an airline company - playing Fly Corp. Can confidently say I have already done a better job than the likes of Alan Joyce and Richard Branson combined. If you like me get a thrill out of organising chaos and fighting fires, then I recommend this game which had me consistently saying ‘just one more attempt’ for roughly twelve straight hours.
Most Awful
I’ve been feeling stuck lately. The burn-out that comes from constantly being on the cusp of having the life you want but never quite tipping over into actually having it. It’s that sort of ‘burn it all down’ energy that I have to be a little more careful with now I’m in my 30s and my parents have sadly downsized and don’t have a lot of room for me to fall back on.
In the midst of a break down, I did find this article from Tiny Buddha genuinely helpful. I’ve been writing up a storm and slowly creating new routines to move forward in a way that’s more slow and steady.
The Lowest Most Awful is a curated digest of the endless content of the internet by comedian and writer Prue Blake. If you’d like, you could follow it or tell your friends to do so.
