I have a theory that shaving your legs or putting in that bit of extra effort (whatever that is for you) should translate to a better day on average. I’m testing this theory by critically reviewing each shave day and rate them out of 100. Any day that scores higher than a 75 was definitely worth the shave (whether the effects were direct or more…indirect. If you want to follow this experiment - subscribe below.
The Shave (19/20)
Well, well, well, in a dramatic turnaround from last weeks misery, this shave was about as perfect as a days shave can be. To be fair, I have absolutely called it in here. It was a beautiful 26C and I made a spur of the moment shave decision at around 11:30 am. This was not a day to be wasted on sub-par leg hair. The shave may have been a snap decision but not one I completed without due care. This included exfoliating! shaving with the shave butter! Using a razor with a proper handle! Slapping on body butter afterwards (body shop - juicy pear, gifted by mum). The only thing that held us back from a perfect score was a small shaving nic in the knee crease. A common issue and thus only worth losing a point - besides at least it isn’t epilating.
The Content (18/20)
I have become deeply obsessed with the work of Brett Goldstein, since watching Ted Lasso (recco from brilliant comedian Raewyn Pickering). As we all know, once a comedy crush has bloomed all content ever created by that person must be consumed as rapidly as possible. Similar to a hemorrhoid cream (I might imagine), one must partake three times per day for the first week, 2 times a day for the second week and once a day until the symptoms completely reside.
I did not have any Ted Lasso left to watch on this day and the fact that it is not batch released is true cruelty. The show is an absolute delight. After watching every episode available twice over in quick succession, I was left feeling quite tender. Have read a few reviews that seem to totally miss the point and not give the show the credit it deserves. But I maintain that there is nothing we need more in these times than something that is goofy and tender.
If you are looking for more, may I recommend watching Superbob on Amazon Prime, binging ‘Lone Island’ and then being lulled to sleep by the sweet sounds of ‘Films to be Buried With’.
If, unlike myself, you prefer a little distance from a single persons creative output. I also read some of My Sister the Serial Killer. Very good, though I was often seething with rage on behalf of the main character (not serial killer). A quick and easy read for those still in lockdown and low on attention span but wanting to spend the attention they do have on something great.
The Food (17/20)
I’ve been trying to walk more and I have found the perfect motivation is purchasing and eating every pastry available within my 5km radius. Today, a yuzu and almond croissant from Bakemono bakers. Y’know i love that yuzu and this croissant was top notch. I did also get a garlic and cream cheese bun because I saw my ex-boyfriend from high school had one and I can’t have him winning the breakup. I am of the belief that winning the breakup is a marathon, not a sprint, and we won’t know an official winner until one of us is dead (statistically, him). No offence to the bakery but this bun was too gooey for me and thus we remain point neutral on this particular item. What a relief.
For dinner, I had rice balls with plenty of togarashi and teriyaki salmon which I made way too salty. As long as my ex doesn’t find out about this, it shouldn’t impact my inevitable post-relationship victory in any way.
I also had a chobani flip aka yogo for adults and/or boring children.
The Social Stuff (16/20)
Socially this day didn’t have quite as much going on, which was nice in its own way. I have no problem hanging out with myself. It is ironic that it can be in such short supply right now. I often Stockholm syndrome myself by having plans then seeing that both my housemates aren’t home and thinking “well there is absolutely no way I can leave now, I can finally hang out quietly in my room the way I really want to”. I know that nothing really changes, but the relief of just having space to myself is honestly, orgasmic. Not just because I can fit in a cheeky mazz without closing the door.
I also enjoyed a nice long walk and talk, because I am living this lockdown Sorkin style (via telephone). That was lovely, but not much to report here without incriminating myself as a terrible person and gossip.
Slightly cheating because it was from a day or two before, but you can also listen to me trying to be friends with the Breakfasters at the link below:
The Miscellaneous Stuff (18/20)
Finally back to using this space for what it is truly meant for! Links to great stuff on the internet!
Official permission in this HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW article to have your evening knock-off drink. It is a productivity move if you call it a German Feierabend, somehow.
I am also taking applications for a snack pen pal! Preference goes to anyone that has access to a 7/11 in Japan.
Actually obsessed with all these artistic and stylish toilet roll holders. Was really laughing the other day imagining a share house where you all had to buy your own toilet paper but to show off by having the most stylish holder would make it worth it.
Moving to a smart Italian village, ASAP. Except not actually because it doesn’t sound like there are enough gigs there and I am so so hungry for gigs, I am wasting away without them.
Enjoy these pictures of people you know from TV dressed up as other people you know from TV. Is there a greater pleasure? Yes. Gossip…but this is a close second.
Final Rating (88/100)
A WORTH IT DAY!! We finally got there. Proud of each and every one of us. Shaving the leg is great for all and not just an oppressive beauty standard. In case it is a fluke though, I think it is best that we still continue with the experiment for many fortnights to come.
I hope you enjoy this newsletter that flies in the face of the wisdom that correlation does not imply causation. If you wanted to support it why not subscribe and forward it to a friend! Preferably with the comment “Lol, Prue Blake is so funny and I love supporting her comedy career”. See you in a fortnight xx
